A local green building project, called "Eco-house in Shanghai," is among
them. The building, now located in city's southwest Xinzhuang area of
Minhang District, will be rebuilt in the Expo site to demonstrate the
energy efficiency concept.

Among the fifty-five  (plus chosen projects, six are from Chinese mainland cities) Shanghai, Tianjin, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Suzhou. Other Chinese proposals come from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

With a site sized more than fifteen  hectares, the Urban Best Practices Area offers a stage for cities around the world to propose their solutions to urban issues from different perspectives.

Originally, Expo organizers planned to choose some thirty  examples for the exhibition.
Due to the overwhelming number of proposals from around the world, the
organizers not only expanded the possible number of projects to be displayed, but they also postponed the deadline for cities to make submissions to January 31 this year.

In the end, the international selection committee of UBPA received one hundred and thirteen projects, among which one hundred and six  proposals from eighty-seven  cities were valid, said Zhou Hanmin, deputy director general of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.

Although the first period of selection is now over, the fifties and one  cities that missed out can still apply to exhibit for a short period of one to ten days during Expo.
Zhou said some projects, such as public policies, are difficult to display in a physical way. Other means of display, such as forums or multi-media presentations, may be more suitable for them.

Being the first World Exposition on the theme of city, Exposition 2010 will attract governments and people from across the world, focusing on the theme "Better City, Better Life." For its 184 days, participants will display urban civilisation to the full extent, exchange their experiences of urban development, disseminate advanced notions on cities and explore new approaches to human habitat, lifestyle and working conditions in the new century. They will learn how to create an eco-friendly society and maintain the sustainable development of human beings.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will centre on innovation and interaction. Innovation is the soul, while cultural interaction is an important mission of the World Expositions. In the new era, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will contribute to human-centred development, scientific and technological innovation, cultural diversity and win-win cooperation for a better future, thus composing a melody with the key notes of highlighting innovation and interaction in the new century.
Expo 2010 Shanghai China will also be a grand international gathering,  in a global perspective and do our best to encourage the participation and gain the understanding and support of various countries and peoples, in order to turn Expo 2010 Shanghai China into a happy reunion of people from all over the world.

In addition, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will offer a wonderful opportunity for cross-culture dialogues. Before the conclusion of the Exposition, a "Shanghai Declaration" will be issued. Harmony was a core proposition of ancient Chinese philosophy, which advocated harmony between people, between man and heaven, and between body and soul. It is also the ideal of some ancient Western philosophers. Over past centuries, human beings have never stopped their search for models of harmonious cities. A series of theories, propositions and models, from More's Utopia to Ledoux's Ideal City to Howard's Garden City, all strive for balance and harmony in terms of space, order, and spiritual and material input and output. Since the 1980s, the concept of sustainable development has risen as a fundamental solution to environmental and development issues. Governments around the world, in their local versions of Agenda 21 (a Chinese Government programme designed to ensure sustainable development in the 21st century), have formulated development strategies that more or less centre on the proposition of "harmony," especially that between the current and future generations. It can be clearly seen that the quest for the "City of Harmony" as run through the urban history of mankind, and has increasingly become a highlight in the blueprint of future cities.

In the waters of the Huangpu sensors will be installed for both vibrations in the air and on water, so they can detect if anyone anything near the shore or by climbing the walls of containment.

The Huangpu River, in whose margins will be located in the Shanghai 2010 Universal Exhibition, will count during the event, with a safety device based on aquatic fiber-optic sensors, reported the newspaper "Shanghai Daily".

The sensors, made of stainless material, already were used in tests of synchronized swimming in the Olympic Games to Beijing to that the swimmers could hear the music underwater.

In addition to security measures, Shanghai continues to produce new plants for the sample and have already begun work on the Boulevard Expo, which will consist of two walks connecting the main wings and join the two sides of the Huangpu River.

There will also be a system for mobile phones which operate using technology wireless (wirelessly) to help visitors to move around the perimeter or obtain information on restaurants, shops or trafficking, and other GPS system to find those children who lost during the visit.

The event, to be held between May 1 and October 31, 2010, already has confirmed docientas twelve participants, of whom one hundred and seventy-five, are thirty-seven countries and international organizations; and is expected to reach sixty million Visitors, including five million foreign tourists.
                                                                                                                                                                                                          
         

En las aguas del Huangpu se instalarán sensores para vibraciones tanto en el aire como en el agua, por lo que pueden detectar si alguien nada cerca de las orillas o trepa por los muros de contención.

El río Huangpu, en cuyas orillas estará situada la Exposición Universal de Shanghai 2010, contará durante el evento con un dispositivo de seguridad basado en sensores acuáticos de fibra óptica, informó hoy el diario "Shanghai Daily".

Los sensores, que fueron creados por el Departamento de Investigación de Fibra Óptica de la Universidad local de Fudan, son sensibles a las vibraciones tanto en el aire como en el agua (donde los infrarrojos o las vallas eléctricas no funcionan), por lo que pueden detectar si alguien nada cerca de las orillas o trepa por los muros de contención.
Los sensores, hechos de material inoxidable, ya fueron utilizados en las pruebas de natación sincronizada de los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing para que las nadadoras pudieran oír la música bajo el agua.

Además de las medidas de seguridad, Shanghai sigue preparando las nuevas instalaciones para la muestra y ya han comenzado las obras del Bulevar de la Expo, que constará de dos paseos que conectarán los pabellones principales y unirán las dos orillas del río Huangpu.

También habrá un sistema para teléfonos móviles que funcionará mediante la tecnología "wireless" (sin cables) para ayudar a los visitantes a moverse por el recinto u obtener información sobre restaurantes, tiendas o el tráfico, y otro sistema de GPS para encontrar a los niños que se pierdan durante la visita.

Por otra parte, se puso en marcha un concurso para encontrar los diseños de productos de la Expo más innovadores y alcanzar con ellos los cinco mil millones de yuanes (cuatrocientos noventa y neve millones de euros, setecientos treint y un millones de dólares) en ventas que tienen como objetivo los organizadores, que también quieren superar la oferta de productos de los recientes Juegos Olímpicos.
Los productos deberán ser "originales, modernos, hechos con materiales ecológicos y fáciles de usar en la vida diaria".

El evento, que se celebrará entre el 1 de mayo y el 31 de octubre de 2010, cuenta ya con doscientos doce participantes confirmados, de los que ciento setenta y cino son países, y treinta y siete organizaciones internacionales. Y se espera alcanzar los sesenta millones de visitantes, incluidos cinco millones de turistas extranjeros.

La muestra universal se centra en la calidad de la vida urbana 

El Ayuntamiento de Bilbao mostrará en la Exposición Universal de Shangai de 2010 la transformación de la ciudad gracias a la renovación urbanística del entorno de la ría y al conocido como "efecto Guggenheim", según se anunció.

Bilbao ha sido seleccionada entre ciento trece ciudades candidatas y estará presente, junto con Barcelona, en el Area de Mejores Prácticas Urbanas dentro de la sección destinada a las "ciudades habitables".
Otras dos ciudades españolas, Madrid y Santiago de Compostela, acudirán al certamen para mostrar cómo han aplicado los criterios de sostenibilidad a la construcción de viviendas.

El Área de Mejores Prácticas Urbanas, de la que formarán parte las cuatro ciudades españolas, se pondrá en marcha por primera vez en Shangai y ocupará un espacio privilegiado de quince áreas del recinto ferial, en una antigua zona industrial rehabilitada. Bilbao acompañará a ciudades como Londres, Osaka, Vancouver, Rótterdam, Hong kong, Seúl, El Cairo o Taipei, entre otras. Además de treinta ciudades europeas Bilbao se relacionará con dieciseís localidades asiáticas, seis americanas, dos africanas y una ciudad oceánica.

Según se explicó, el comité internacional de selección ha tenido en cuenta al seleccionar a Bilbao, la "asombrosa recuperación" de una zona industrial y su conversión en una ciudad "moderna y cómoda" para sus habitantes.

In the Shanghai Expo 2010 will show the urban transformation of Bilbao

The exhibition focuses on the universal quality of urban life
The city of Bilbao appears on the Universal Exhibition of Shanghai in 2010, transforming the city thanks to the renovation of urban environment and the estuary known as the "Guggenheim effect", as announced.


Según se dijo, el proyecto presentado con la candidatura de la Villa Bilbao Guggenheim ++,  da una buena muestra de la "revolución urbana" experimentada en la ciudad en los últimos veinticinco años; y que forma parte de un amplio conjunto de iniciativas integradas con una visión audaz e inteligente, que se ha preocupado por transformar Bilbao a través de:
- su Ría;
- el arte;
- la recuperación de su Centro Histórico ; y
- la reconversión de una economía industrial en otra mucho más diversificada y centrada en el sector de servicios.

Aprentemente,  la imagen de la ciudad ha cambiado de forma radical. Tanto en el exterior, como entre los propios residentes, quienes valoran de forma positiva o muy positiva el cambio experimentado en por esta ciudad.

The Expo Shanghai will take place between 1 May and October 31, 2010 in an area of ten hectares trescinetas in the district of Pudong, on the banks of the Huangpu River.
It is expected to come to the event some seventy million visitors, thus breaking the record which currently holds the Osaka Expo in 1970 and turning it into an event of
extraordinary significance.

La Expo Shangai tendrá lugar entre el 1º de mayo y el 31 de octubre de 2010 en un espacio de trescinetas diez hectáreas en el distrito de Pudong, en la ribera del río Huangpu.
Se espera que  acudan al evento unos setenta millones de visitantes, batiendo así el récord que ostenta actualmente la Expo de Osaka de 1970, y convirtiéndola en un acontecimiento de extraordinaria relevancia internacional.

On March 29, 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, on behalf of Canada, accepted the official invitation to participate in Expo 2010.
International expositions (or world fairs) are among the world's largest and most exciting events, bringing people from diverse backgrounds and cultures together to discover the resources, innovations, and cultural legacies each nation brings to our world. Canada's rich cultural diversity, flourishing arts scene and leading-edge business and technology sectors come together seamlessly, resulting in a highly visible and dynamic presence at expos.
Canada looks forward to collaborating with partners across the country to present a high quality, high impact pavilion presentation that will be a highlight of Expo 2010.

The Canada Pavilion location has been chosen!  Canada will be building its own pavilion on a 6000m² site near the south entrance of the Expo site. This area, in Expo Zone C, is located on the Pudong side of the Huangpu River. Along with other North and South American countries, Zone C will also be home for European and African pavilions. The Canada Pavilion has always been a “must-see” among national pavilions at expos, not only because of its cutting-edge exhibition technology, engaging presentations and creative programming, but also due to its knowledgeable young hosting staff.
These young Canadian hosts are selected from across Canada. The criteria to be a host is demanding and all hosting and VIP staff are required to be proficient in English and/or French and the language of the host country. This ability results in a dynamic team that is authentically Canadian, yet is able to communicate with visitors to the Pavilion in their own language.

L'endroit où sera aménagé le Pavillon du Canada a été choisi! Le Canada bâtira son propre pavillon, sur un lot de 6 000 m² près de l’entrée sud du terrain de l’Expo. Celui-ci est situé dans la Zone d'exposition C, dans le district de Pudong, le long du fleuve Huangpu. Les pavillons des pays nord et sud-américains seront installés dans la Zone C, de même que ceux des pays européens et africains. Lors des rencontres avec les responsables d'Expo 2010, diverses questions continuent d'être abordées. À suivre de près!
Le Pavillon du Canada a de tout temps été un pavillon national « à ne pas manquer » lors des expositions, non seulement en raison de ses technologies d'exposition d'avant-garde, de ses présentations enlevantes et de sa programmation originale, mais aussi à cause de son personnel d'accueil jeune et bien renseigné.
Ces jeunes affectés aux services d'accueil proviennent du Canada entier. Pour être choisis, ils doivent satisfaire à des critères exigeants et tous les membres du personnel d'accueil et du salon des dignitaires sont tenus de maîtriser l'anglais ou encore le français ainsi que la langue du pays hôte. L'on peut compter ainsi sur une équipe dynamique authentiquement canadienne, en mesure par ailleurs de communiquer avec les visiteurs du pavillon dans leur langue.

“In the contemporary world with its abundance of visual experience, with the pictorial language of communication reigning supreme, with the almost unconstrained and instant accessibility of iconographic material, an exposition piece of architecture will only be attractive insofar it can offer perceptual sensations attainable only through direct, unmediated exposure to out-of-the-ordinary, singular stimuli, insofar it can provide a quality of experience born out of the chemistry of inter-sensory stimulation. Given the nature of the exposition, the exhibition facility has to denote, by its esthetic distinctiveness, the country of origin, has to constitute, by the strength of its stylistic connotations, an evocative, recognizable and memorable cultural ideogram. In our design, the cultural idiom is primarily conveyed through the theme, the motif of folk-art paper cut-out. Or, more precisely, through a rendering of the motif, a transcription of an elementary esthetic code into the contemporary language of architectural décor. The transcription rationale was twofold. First of all, we did not wish the design to be literally folklorish, a mechanical multiplication of convention-approved set patterns. The intention was for the structure décor to draw on and make reference to tradition, but ultimately to be that tradition’s contemporary reinterpretation, a creative extension into the present day by way of inspiration rather than replication. Secondly, we aspired to make the structure in its own right, in a purely architectural dimension, a significant landmark, a showcase of Polish design achievements. That it should be an attractive, eye-catching exterior both in daylight, against the panorama of other Expo facilities, as well as a mesmerizing experience at night with the edifice drawn by the multi-colored light seeping through the cut-out patterns. And reversely, that it should provide inside visitors with comparable experience by shaping the outer skin patterning in such a way that the sun rays shining through would chisel, by light and shade, the space under the vault. The structure’s overall shape, with many slanting planes, on the one hand complements and rounds out, by the suggestion of a folded sheet of paper, the ‘cut-out’ narrative, on the other creates inside a geometrically intriguing and flexible space that can be creatively apportioned, by inner divisions, to different exhibition, performance and utility functions and uses.”
